CREATIVE RECONSTRUCTION
Where some see economy, Yumiko Kato Benson sees creativity.
Benson is a Canon City weaver who frequents area thrift shops for the sweaters they sell. She skips the acrylic and the cotton ones, and buys silk and cashmere sweaters at a fraction of the price their yarn would cost — and she then recycles them into luxurious scarves.
Benson's weaving will be on display at the 27th annual Handwoven Holiday Sale, Nov. 4-12 at The Vail at 217 S. Grand Ave. in Pueblo. The event is sponsored by the Handweavers Guild of Pueblo, and Benson is a guild member.
She was introduced to weaving by friends in Salida in 2004. She knew how to knit, crochet and sew and had done silversmithing while she still lived in Japan, but she never learned to weave.
"Weaving in Japan, only craftsmen and artisans do it," says Benson, 70, who's lived in the U.S. since 1976. "Usually, ordinary people don't learn to weave."
Benson wanted to work in silk, which is expensive in this country, so she starting buying silk sweaters, unraveling them and using the yarn. Because she's a knitter and understands sweater construction — she puts them together — she's able to easily take them apart.
