I have a 100% cotton flannel and it is a size M. I think it is too big so maybe if I put it in the dryer and set it on high repeatedly, will the shirt shrink a lot? maybe even to the same size as S? thanks!
Will the overall shirt shrink?
There is a good chance that it will shrink to a size small if it has not already been dried and shrunk already. If it is a brand new shirt, you have good chances that it will be the size you will like after a few cycles.
Good luck.

I bought a thermal/waffle shirt made of 100% cotton but it says "Hand wash and line dry only." Dry cleaning is ok too. It is a tad too big and I was planning on putting it in the dryer to shrink it just a bit. It has some markings on it...
Try washing it in very hot water and letting it air dry. You might be able to dry it in the dryer if you put it on a very low setting and check it frequently, but if the markings are made of certain kinds of rubber they can put out harmful fumes.

Why do Cotton Shirts Shrink? | Why
Why do cotton shirts shrink?
The cotton shirts are made of plant fibers. The plant fibers are manufactured and processed. The plant fibers in the shirts will react with large quantities of heat. The heat will make the cotton fibers of the shirt to shrink and hence the entire shirt will shrink. The cotton shirts can be stretched extensively. The shirt can be stretched to its original size, though there are certain stretch marks that are left over on it. It is found that air drying and cold washing will prevent the cotton clothes to shrink. The life of the clothes can be extended and improved by air drying. The heat from the drier will shrivel the fibers of the cotton shirt. Washing the cotton in cold water and drying them by hanging in the air will make them not to shrink....
