Judging true price of goods

 This past week I’ve been trying to figure out the true price of many items I buy on a regular basis, as well as many of the items I already own. Many of you may think that the true price might have something to do with how many hours I have to work to pay for a certain item (which is a great exercise to look at what an item is really worth to you), or how much an item costs after I’ve owned it for a while. But the true price takes into account how an item was created, the impact of the creation of an item on the environment, people, the economy and you. Upon exploring the true price of many items in my house, I’ve been appalled at what those prices really are.

An example that Zoe Weil gives in her TED Talk titled The World Becomes What You Teach is a cotton T-shirt. The true price isn’t what’s written on the price tag, though that is the immediate price you pay, the true price starts all the way back in the cotton fields. According to Dr. Weil most of the world’s cotton comes from developing countries such as Uzbekistan where the labor laws and environmental laws are not on the same level as ours. Cotton is usually heavily sprayed with pesticides and herbicides, to produce as much cotton as possible. In some countries chemicals can be used that have been banned in the U.S., and these chemicals can be applied in amounts that differ from what regulations in the U.S. allow. These chemicals greatly impact the environment, and since sometimes environmental protection laws differ in different countries, this can cause disaster. From the cotton field the cotton travels to factories that knit the cotton into fabric and often dye it. Again labor laws and environmental laws differ, and since a large portion of the dye will not be soaked into the fabric, it has to go somewhere, and depending on the laws and regulations that dye might make its way into the environment. This can pollute the water for plants and wildlife as well as people living near the factory. Then the fabric will travel to a factory to be made into the final product, and from that factory to your local store. Given the background of the creation of a simple cotton t-shirt; you might think the price of final product does not reflect the true price to create the shirt.

Stern says they will be forced to raise the price of their most popular dress shirt by about 10 dollars.
