Victoria's Quilts offer comfort to cancer patients
While it's important to continue supporting research, donations can feel impersonal, especially to those whose lives have been touched by cancer and who seek direct ways to support people battling the disease. Is there anything a layperson can do to help in a personal but meaningful way?
Victoria's Quilts Canada has a suggestion. The mission of this national non-profit charitable organization, headquartered in Ottawa and with branches across the country, is to bring comfort to people with cancer by providing them with hand-made quilts, free of charge. The organization was founded in the United States by Deb Rogers and named in honour of her sister-in-law who was a quilter and had died from cancer. With Deb's blessing, Betty Griffin began the Canadian organization in 2000, with just 12 volunteers. Branches are now flourishing across Canada and in the last 11 years have comforted and soothed the spirits of several thousand Canadians undergoing treatment.

She had been diagnosed with breast cancer in June 2010, had a mastectomy in August, followed by a gruelling autumn then winter of chemotherapy and a silent spring of radiation. My wife bore her illness in a manner that demanded nothing but admiration.
