The headline on my local newspaper's business section read, "JOB FAIR DRAWS 1,000!" for an "over 50" job fair. Below the headlines was a 3-column photo of an "over 50" gentleman talking to an employer looking to hire older workers. He was wearing what looked like cotton khakis and a golf shirt.
"What was he thinking?" I yelled across the breakfast table. My wife, looking over my shoulder, said, "Well, maybe that's how he dressed in his last job. Things are more casual now."
"He no longer has his last job!" I said. "Hasn't he ever heard that 'first impressions are lasting impressions?' "
Although I am totally opposed to casual dress in the workplace, I know it is happening. I also know that when you dress for business, you look and act more professionally, and you are generally much more productive.
When you are engaged in a job search, you simply must put forth your best possible first impression. You must appear like you mean business. In a job fair, with over 40 potential employers, dress to the top level of acceptability in the work place. For the gentleman in the photo, at least a blazer, dress slacks, dress shirt and tie -- not cotton khakis and a golf shirt!
