Mohsin Shafi uses the medium of collage, whose tired pop art associations he transcends with the quality of his presentation. Framed in finely finished white versions of cheap gilded frames from Lahore's Auriga Market and Raja Center, Shafi's works are placed like precious objects along a creamy white shelf with molded supports. These pastiches are fashionable and random, though Shafi might argue with me about that. What unites them is their size, their pristine execution and their fluffy humor; there is a Victorian music-box quality about all of them. In 'Original Sin', for instance, a faceless black-and-white cutout of a bride and groom (the artist's parents or grandparents?) from an old photograph is glued to an old wrapping-paper print to form the ground on which sits an elegant old typewriter. On the wall behind the figures is a gilded old frame.

Here are some of the photos from my recent trip to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico that I have been meaning to share. I bought this dress over the summer after immediately falling in love with it, but it ended up just sitting in my closet with the tag on it because I never had anywhere to wear it. When I decided to go to Cabo for New Years I knew it would be the perfect New Years Eve dress. I needed something beachy, but still dressy (and not in the typical sparkly and flashy New Years fashion). It's sexy but also elegant. With a sunkissed golden tan and a loose beach side ponytail it worked out perfectly. Other photos mixed in of my friends (who are dying to make an appearance on my blog haha!), the beach, view from the house, etc. Oh gosh I miss vacation :(

All The Pretty Dresses: Wonderful Gold Ball Gown 1890's style

This is a place for any extant garments in private collections from about 1929 back. There is no beginning date. The only rule is that it can't be currently in a museum and must be before a time my Great Aunts can remember. :-) I mostly post items I've seen on ebay, etsy, or other auction sites so we will continue to have a record of them for research purposes. Gorgeous antique victorian ball gown or reception gown. Done in a silk brocade fabric. Absolutely gorgeous and extraordinary. Hugh ballon sleeves. Pleated silk satin around the bottom of the skirt. Lined with silk and a cotton muslin or soft crinoline type fabric. The skirt is a bustle type that is full and gathered at the back of the dress. If I have missed any details you need to know about please send me a message. I can provide more photos if you need to see something in particular. There are no returns on this dress. There are 16 botton holes, but the buttons are missing. There is fraying of the silk fabric that lines the lower inside of the bodice. One stay is missing from one side of the front bodice and one broken stay on the back bodice. There is staining under the arms that shows up more in the pictures than in person. There is also a faint spot on the dress front. I am sure cleaning this would take care of most of the staining. There are hook & eyes that would be used to attach the skirt to the bodice and the back skirt closure. There is some fraying on the top of the skirt waist. All the pleating around the bottom of the skirt is fine except a tiny area shown in the last photo. One sleeve lining would need repair (see photo 7). There is some very slight wearing under the arms near the seam, this can be seen when held to the light.
