It didn't snow at Christmas

Datuk Dr Paddy Bowie, 86, recalls her first Christmas in the tropics after leaving England.

I came out of the United Kingdom an ardent daughter of the empire. The plan was that I would come for no more than two years. Of course, I ended up never going back.

When I arrived in Singapore, where the pillboxes were red and traffic drove on the left, it was very familiar and I settled into the routine existence as an expatriate.

There, I met my husband Carl Schubert, a Dutch Burgher.

I crossed over into Malaya in 1963 when Singapore joined the Federation of Malaya. Carl always preferred this side of the causeway anyway. We eventually received our citizenship here.

I celebrated my first Christmas in Singapore in 1955. It was quite a culture shock. I had always been used to a white Christmas. It just didn't feel right without the snow.

After a while though, I realised the essence of the celebration was the same -- it was celebrated with joy and peace, just like anywhere else in the world.
