Winterize workouts: Proper prep, gear, diet help fuel exercisers in cold weather

Bruce Bowen doesn't plan to abandon his workout routine and hibernate during the winter, but the longtime runner does make adjustments when lacing up in chillier weather.

A runner for more than three decades, Bowen currently heads out four times a week on runs varying between 10 to 16 kilometres. When a snowfall hits, he might reduce his distance and slow his pace, but he still heads outdoors.

"I'm not going to be trying to go for any sort of a faster pace run," said Bowen, manager of the Running Room in Halifax.

"I'm just maintaining good footing so that I'm not going to slip, keep an eye down for where I'm going and saying, `Oh, that looks like ice' and try to go around it."

There are certain winter conditions in which Bowen might give the outdoor run a pass. For example, if the thermostat dips to minus 20 C, he will try to find somewhere indoors to take his strides.

"As far as precipitation, if it gets into like a high wind condition so it's blowing the snow around and visibility becomes a factor then I won't go," he said.

All The Pretty Dresses: Plus Sized Victorian Gown

This is a place for any extant garments in private collections from about 1929 back. There is no beginning date. The only rule is that it can't be currently in a museum and must be before a time my Great Aunts can remember. :-) I mostly post items I've seen on ebay, etsy, or other auction sites so we will continue to have a record of them for research purposes. This antique Victorian era floral silk brocade black lace bustle ball gown skirt train dress dates from 1880. It is made of a grayish brown taupe color silk brocade damask fabric with a tulip floral pattern design. There is a sheer black lace polka dot net large flounce shawl collar, with black silk floral applique trim accents. This beautiful bustle ball gown dress has a squared front neckline, 3/4 length puffy sleeves, a pleated drape bustle back long train skirt, with hook & eye closures. It is lined in a polished brown cotton print fabric, with a dust ruffle petticoat skirt lining underneath and the owners name tag label sewn inside. The dress is a large size, measuring 57 inches long in the front, 72 inches long in the back, with a 34 inch waist, 36 inch bust and 13 inch back. It is in good wearable condition, with slight underarm discoloration, some faint age spotting on the front bodice and skirt (see close-up).

the dress is on and offable
