Cotton served as chairman of the board for the past two years and vice chairman for eight years prior. He dedicated a total of 16 years as a board member. Cotton's tenure included hiring new superintendents, implementing dress codes, building new schools, establishing the International Baccalaureate Program at Hickory High and opening the Hickory Career and Arts Magnet High School.

Hemphill served as the board's vice chair and served as a board member for the past 14 years.

Chief District Court Judge Burford Cherry administered the oath of office to remaining and new members. They are:

Charlotte Williams, member-at-large, who is serving her second term on the board.

Margaret Pope, who previously filled Vanessa Linebarger's remaining term and was elected to represent Ward 4.

Amy Monroe, who will represent Ward 6 after Cotton's retirement.

The Rev. T. Anthony Spearman, who was selected by the board to fill Gloria Hemphill's remaining two-year term. He will represent Ward 3.
