It may have taken a few extra minutes for D.K.Goswami to persuade the local police to allow a peaceful gathering behind the Gandhi statue on Marina Beach. Soon enough, he was at the midst of the gathering reading from a handwritten paper, after assuring the officials that it will all be over in 20 minutes.

“The Assamese people living in Chennai are here together today to pay tribute to Dr.Bhupen Hazarika,” he said in Assamese, to the solemn gathering of men, a few in traditional attire, and women, almost all wearing the ‘mekhela chador', the traditional Assamese dress. “During the separation of Bangladesh, Dr.Hazarika sang songs to inspire the people of Bangladesh while promoting harmony and peace,” said Mr.Goswami, highlighting one of the great contributions made by the noted singer. A condolence letter addressed to Bhupen Hazarika's family soon made the rounds to collect signatures.
