Putting the 'Fancy' in Fancy Friday
By Tony Grassetti
As the Fall Fancy Friday quickly approaches, so, too, does the now familiar and festive task of acquiring a suitable outfit. Unlike previous Fancy Fridays, however, guests of this event are met with the additional challenge, albeit a gratifying one, of incorporating an early 1960s fashion theme inspired by the AMC program, “Mad Men.” As such, attendees must trade in their once-donned and extravagantly elegant formal wear, for a more contemporary retro-modern vibe. Although this may sound like a daunting effort, “Mad Men’s” sartorial influence has so ubiquitously infiltrated popular culture, one needn’t search beyond the nearest shopping mall (or thrift store) to find such inspired garments. With the aid of a few forthcoming tips for how to achieve the “Mad Men” look, the Fall Fancy Friday to benefit Veterans F.I.R.S.T. will for the first time have a uniquely streamlined and cohesive fashion profile.

Women's Special Occasion Dress Boutique Opens in Port ...
Petra, a special occassion dress boutique on Port Washington Boulevard, is now open for business.
The shop's owner, Cassandra Rock, named the store "Petra" because it means "rock" in Latin.
A true bootstrapper, Rock did a lot of the preparation work herself before the shop's October grand opening.
“A final product was delivered about three and a half weeks ago or so and then we painted and laid the floors and went from there,” Rock said.
Walking through the front door, visitors are greeted with a woodsy scent. The floors are a dark brown and black wood, complementing the black showcases on each of the store that hold neatly hanging designer dresses. Between the showcases are the dressing rooms, adorned by a black and white floral curtain, black chair, hanger and mirror inside. The store also features two crystal chandeliers that shine light on the small tables holding evening jewelry and handbags.

Helen of Tricôt: Summer cotton dress, Burda Moden February 2009
by Helena Torkzadsson
I first chose the model, it should have been simple a quick to sew. The one I liked was N122 from Burda Moden February 2009 magazine. It took me several nights, 2 meters beautiful Italian cotton (alas, no bargain this time, still much cheaper than a new dress to buy), slight modifications and voilà, a new cotton dress is ready. Comfortable and light.
